US double standards (Social media)
International News: U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been warning India over its trade with Russia, was left speechless when a journalist asked him about America’s own imports from Russia. During a press event on Tuesday, when Trump was asked if the U.S. still buys uranium and fertilizers from Russia, he replied, “I don’t know anything about it. I’ll have to check.”
This moment has further fueled India’s criticism that the U.S. follows double standards—targeting India while doing the same itself.
India recently raised concerns over the way Washington is pressuring India to stop buying Russian oil, even though American companies are still trading with Russia. India said that the U.S. is being unfair by continuing its own business with Russia while asking others to stop.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that U.S. firms are still importing nuclear fuel like uranium hexafluoride, palladium for electric vehicles, and fertilizers and chemicals from Russia. At the same time, India is being told to cut ties with Moscow.
India strongly defended its position, saying that its energy purchases are based on national economic needs, not political pressure. The foreign ministry added that the U.S. had earlier supported India’s decision to import oil from Russia to stabilize the global energy market.
Officials believe that the real reason for Trump’s anger is India’s refusal to stop buying affordable Russian oil. This oil has helped India manage inflation and energy demands during difficult global conditions.
Speaking to CNBC on Tuesday, Trump once again attacked India’s trade practices. He said, “India hasn’t been a good trading partner. They sell a lot to us, but we don’t sell much to them.” He added that the U.S. had earlier fixed a 25% tariff, but now he plans to increase it significantly within 24 hours because of India's oil trade with Russia.
He claimed that India is helping Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine by continuing to buy oil and that he will not tolerate this.
India, however, has made it clear that it will not change its trade or energy policies under pressure. Officials said that decisions related to oil imports are made only after considering India’s national interest, and not because of any foreign demands.
Earlier this week, India accused both the U.S. and the European Union of hypocrisy, pointing out that many Western nations are still doing business with Russia quietly, even as they criticize others.
As tensions rise, Trump’s attempt to corner India on its Russia trade has backfired, exposing America’s own double standards. India remains firm on its policies and is ready to defend its choices on the global stage. The coming days will reveal whether the U.S. will continue this pressure or seek more balanced cooperation with India.
